This module will aim to cover the current agricultural issues pertinent at the time both within the UK and globally.
Subjects could include:
Current and new UK/EU legislation: developments such as NVZs, Farm Waste regulations, Single Farm Payment, Stewardship schemes
Livestock production updates: relevant improvements in health and welfare standards; current disease threats and developments in managing disease; advances in breed development and reproductive technologies; updates in management of livestock performance
Crop production updates: relevant improvements in pest and weed control measures; current disease threats and developments in managing disease; advances in genetic improvements; farm soil management and improvements in soil fertility; updates in management of crop performance
Agricultural development drivers: domestic and global issues surrounding sustainability such as water and carbon footprints, biodiversity and habitat management; consumer perceptions and marketing; commodity and energy prices; alternative land uses and diversification.
To achieve credit for this module, students must be able to:
- Evaluate developments in current and new UK and EU legislation relevant to landbased industries
- Discuss and interpret updates and developments in farm livestock and crop production
- Identify and discuss domestic and global influences on the future development of the agricultural industry
