Module content

This module will aim to cover the current agricultural issues pertinent at the time both within the UK and globally.

Subjects could include:

Current and new UK/EU legislation: developments such as NVZs, Farm Waste regulations, Single Farm Payment, Stewardship schemes

Livestock production updates: relevant improvements in health and welfare standards; current disease threats and developments in managing disease; advances in breed development and reproductive technologies; updates in management of livestock performance

Crop production updates: relevant improvements in pest and weed control measures; current disease threats and developments in managing disease; advances in genetic improvements; farm soil management and improvements in soil fertility; updates in management of crop performance

Agricultural development drivers: domestic and global issues surrounding sustainability such as water and carbon footprints, biodiversity and habitat management; consumer perceptions and marketing; commodity and energy prices; alternative land uses and diversification.

Module outcomes

To achieve credit for this module, students must be able to:

  1. Evaluate developments in current and new UK and EU legislation relevant to landbased industries
  2. Discuss and interpret updates and developments in farm livestock and crop production
  3. Identify and discuss domestic and global influences on the future development of the agricultural industry
