Whether you’re interested in domestic animals, exotic species or farm animals, studying the science and technology of the field is a gateway to many rewarding careers. Our degree course in Animal Science will give you the academic and practical experience to ultimately take your pick from a range of careers including a nutritionist, laboratory technician and veterinary specialist.

On this specialist Animal Science degree, you will gain in-depth laboratory training and practical animal handling and husbandry skills – all underpinned by a strong theoretical core of knowledge relevant to a range of animal species and animal business contexts.
When it comes to applying your knowledge, you will have the added advantage of commercial experience and entrepreneurial nous, developed on a work experience placement during the summer holiday after your first year. This will significantly strengthen your portfolio, whether you use it to gain future employment or continue your studies in a range of animal-related subjects, including farm animals, equine, wildlife and zoology-based areas.
Upon successful completion of the foundation degree, you will have the opportunity to progress on to an appropriate BSc Honours top-up programmes delivered or validated by the RAU, including BSc (Hons) in Agricultural Management, BSc Honours Equine Studies, BSc Honours Wildlife Conservation, BSc Honours Animal Science & Management. Progression opportunities will also be available to appropriate Honours conversion courses at other HEIs in the UK.
When it comes to applying your knowledge, you will have the added advantage of commercial experience and entrepreneurial know-how developed on a work experience placement during the summer vacation between your first and second year. You will produce a portfolio of evidence of your learning experience which will feed into the level 5 Work Based Learning module.
This will significantly enhance your graduate prospects, whether you decide to enter employment or continue your studies in a range of animal-related subjects; including farm animals, equine, wildlife, and zoology-based areas
As well as laboratory classes and animal handling classes at both the RAU and Cirencester College campuses, you will learn via lectures, seminars, and a period of practical work-based learning at both level 4 and level 5, enabling you to apply theoretical learning to real-life practical situations in a range of different commercial businesses.
You will be assessed on the basis of your research projects, examinations, case studies, management plans, portfolio, presentations, and practical animal handling skills.
Timetables are normally available one month before registration. Please note that while we make every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week. Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and societies activities.
Each module is worth a specified number of credits. Each credit equates to 10 hours of total study time. Total study time includes scheduled teaching, independent study and assessment activity.
Full-time students normally take modules worth 60 credits per 15 week semester but this can vary depending on your elective choice. Part-time students taking proportionally fewer credits per semester. All students take a total of 120 credits per level and 360 credits for the degree as a whole. Your overall grade for your degree is based on marks obtained for modules taken at level 5 and level 6 (weighted 30:70 accordingly.)

The Royal Agricultural University is currently going through an internal review of its curriculum to ensure the best possible student experience through innovative teaching, learning and assessment in an industry-led context. - A Level: CD – min.56 UCAS Tariff points (to include at least one A Level pass.)
- BTEC: MPP
- GCSE: (Minimum five GCSEs) - English and Mathematics (or Maths Numeracy for Welsh applicants) at Grade C / 4 or higher are required.
- International Baccalaureate: 24 points.
- Access to HE: 45 credits at level 3, of which 15 must be awarded at Merit or higher. (Pass at Literacy & Numeracy skills at level 2 are accepted in lieu of GCSE English & Mathematics)
Whilst a Level 3 science background is preferred, the programme has been structured to enable those without a science subject at level 3, but who are keen to follow such a route, to enter and progress through the programme.
Alternative entry routes are available for a range of other qualifications. Prior experience is also considered, subject to approval by the programme manager and admissions staff.

Tuition fees cover the cost of a student’s academic studies. This usually includes teaching costs, registration and examination fees (not repeat or trailing modules, re-sit fees or coursework resubmission) and relevant courses at the RAU Rural Innovation Centre. Any costs associated with work placements will be the student's responsibility.
For the academic year 2018-19 the tuition fees for this course are:
