My placement experience
I decided to study agriculture at the Royal Agricultural University because of the combination of land-based management and applied science on offer. As part of the course, I completed a 12-month placement within the Waitrose Head Office, in the Directorate responsible for buying meat, poultry, fish, frozen food, and dairy – and was the first ever Waitrose placement student for Agricultural Strategy.
My placement was specific to livestock production within the Waitrose supply chain, which gave me an in-depth understanding of supply chain dynamics which is truly valuable. My role was to support the Agricultural Manager in delivering the agricultural strategy; collating key performance data and farm risk assessment data, and contributing to sustainability and production research.
Going back to the RAU, I feel more focussed and believe that I have a better appreciation of commerce and agribusiness.
Going back to the RAU, I feel more focussed and believe that I have a better appreciation of commerce and agribusiness, having experienced the supply chain first-hand. When I graduate my aspiration is to work within the livestock supply chain in the UK or overseas.
