My RAU experience

I chose to study Real Estate at the RAU as I have always had an interest in the property sector and wanted to expand my understanding of the different areas within the industry. What attracted me to the RAU was the variety of modules studied as they allowed me to explore areas and understand which areas in the industry interested me the most.

One of the highlights of my course was visiting Newland Homes, a housing development located in Tetbury. I found this visit particularly valuable as it allowed me to gain a practical insight into how the principles covered throughout the course are applied within a real residential development. Being able to see the development in person helped me understand the considerations and decisions that developers have to make throughout a project. This was just one of many field trips during my course.

What I have enjoyed most about studying at the RAU, has been the combination of my course and social events throughout the years. The RAU is a smaller, close-knit environment, which made it easier to get to know other students and lecturers. The lecturers have always been approachable and supportive, particularly during the writing of my dissertation. The social side of university has allowed me to make the best friendships and the opportunity to be involved in many events over the three years.

 

What I gained from the RAU 

During my third year, I worked part-time at Moore Allen & Innocent, working alongside the residential sales team whilst continuing with my studies. This gave me the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the residential property industry and put some of my knowledge that I had developed through my course into practice. I worked closely with clients and the wider team which gave me a valuable insight into the day-to-day responsibilities within residential sales.

Real Estate as a course opens up many doors for you and the variety of modules helps you to develop an understanding of which sectors you are most interested in. The smaller lecture sizes make it easier to ask questions and get support when you need it. I would encourage prospective students to get involved as much as possible, particularly with field trips and opportunities to learn about the industry outside of seminars and lectures.

I am now a Graduate Surveyor at Dalcour Maclaren in the infrastructure sector. I have also just launched my own clothing brand which the universities Enterprise and Employability team were very helpful with guiding me in the beginning stages.

To any students thinking of studying at the RAU, I would definitely say go for it! My Real Estate course prepared me for my current role as it greatly developed my knowledge of the industry, taught me the relevant legislation and enhanced my problem-solving skills, which are important in my role as a surveyor. Overall, the combination of academic knowledge and practical experience has prepared me well for the transition from university to my role at Dalcour Maclaren and has given me a strong foundation to continue developing my career.
