My RAU experience

I had looked at similar courses elsewhere but was pleased to find this course was relatively local and could be studied part time over several years. I really liked the flexibility that was offered at the RAU, with lectures being recorded in case life got in the way of attending; as one of several students who has been balancing my studies with work, it has been important for the course to be able to accommodate this.

Visiting the National Trust’s new aquisition at Munstead Wood whilst on the Practical Conservation module with Marianne Suhr has been a real highlight. Many of the field trips we’ve undertaken have meant we could meet really inspiring people and have first-hand contact with elements that we have studied. but Munstead was a huge treat as I’m a big Arts and Crafts fan.

What I’m enjoying most is that the RAU is a relatively small university set-up and so there is more individual opportunity to participate and learn with a variety of great tutors. I have also really enjoyed coming back to study as a mature student, meeting such like-minded people from a wide range of backgrounds.

Learning how to write long-form reports and assessments has been a challenge as it has been many years since I did it as an undergraduate. I’ve really valued being able to send drafts through for feedback from tutors, and their support with both accessibility and navigating new technology.

What I gained from the RAU

I'm just going into my third year and am looking to use my new skills and a deeper interest in a new role in the near future. In the meantime, I have been encouraged to keep my interest going by attending further training and keeping up my friendship with several people I have met on the course.
