My RAU experience

I chose to study at the RAU as it offered a degree in both equine science and business which related to the career I wanted to pursue after uni. The small class size and friendly atmosphere was appealing to me in addition to the strong industry connections.

During my time at the RAU there were a number of highlights which included equine dissections (heart, head, leg, lungs, digestive tract), field trips to different places such as Cheltenham racecourse, and the Irish Bloodstock trip which was an amazing experience!

I enjoyed the fact that everyone at the RAU is like‑minded, which made it easy to get on with so many people. The modules were engaging and relevant to the industry and its future. The social side was also great fun which will be one of the things I'll miss the most!

During my dissertation there were some challenges, but my supervisor was always available to offer advice and the support I received made a big difference.

 

What I gained from the RAU 

For my placement, I focused on my own business. It gave me a realistic understanding of what it takes to run an equine business and became a real source of motivation to pursue it after university. The placement helped me grow in confidence and clarified the direction I wanted my career to take. I now run my own freelance business as well as currently working as a Training Assistant in the Pony Club Head Office.

The course gave me the essential equine and business knowledge that I could apply straight into my work. It also developed my confidence and professionalism, preparing me extremely well for a career within the equine industry.

To any students thinking of studying at the RAU I would say take all the opportunities available to you, as they will help open doors within the equine industry to job roles, placements, and professional connections. Get involved, ask questions, and make the most of the support from lecturers — the more you put in, the more you’ll get out!
