My RAU experience

I chose the RAU because of its unique balance of tradition and forward-thinking. Coming from a background in sport, estate management, and family business, I was looking for somewhere that would give me both the entrepreneurial tools and the practical experience to develop my ideas. The RAU offered exactly that - an environment where heritage and innovation come together.

A sporting highlight has been captaining the RAU Golf Society team to a historic win against the Chartered Surveyors Golf Society at Minchinhampton. To be asked to serve as Honorary President of the Society, and to also become an honorary member of the CSGS, has been a real privilege. Through golf, I’ve enjoyed not only developing my own game but also being part of a team and supporting others’ growth as players. I’m especially grateful for the RAU Sports Scholarship, which made this possible. Winning the Grand Idea competition was also a standout moment. It gave me the belief that my padel installation business could become a reality, and I am hugely grateful to the Entrepreneurship Programme for the guidance and support they have given me throughout the process.

Balancing my studies with sporting commitments, business ideas, and responsibilities that come with been a mature student has definitely been a challenge. But the RAU has always provided the support, encouragement, and flexibility I’ve needed to keep progressing. Whether it’s academic guidance, scholarships, or practical training opportunities, the University has given me the tools to overcome challenges and keep aiming higher.

What I gained from the RAU

I carried out my placement at the Corsham Estate, working alongside Angus Methuen Campbell and his excellent team. My role was a combination of practical estate management and learning from the team on the ground. What I enjoyed most was the chance to be part of such a knowledgeable and dedicated team. I was given responsibility, but also the support to develop my skills in a real-world context. I learned how important practical skills and teamwork are to successful estate management. I also developed a deeper understanding of how estates are managed in a sustainable and responsible manor, and how attention to detail and communication are essential in this field.

I’ve been fortunate to be invited back on multiple occasions to work with the Corsham estate team, building on the experience from my placement whilst I complete my studies . The skills and qualifications I gained through the RAU have been directly relevant, and I’m grateful to both the University and Corsham Estate for the opportunities they’ve given me to continue developing in this area.

The RAU gives you more than a degree - it gives you opportunities, support, and a community that genuinely wants to see you succeed. Whether it’s through sport, business, estate management, or personal development, there are so many ways to grow here. If you’re willing to take part and put the effort in, the RAU will help you get the very best out of yourself.
