My RAU experience

I chose to study at the RAU because it is a small close-knit university offering a unique range of courses, and one of a few that specified a degree in environment and sustainability.

I will be going into my second year of studying BSc (Hons) Environment and Sustainability in September 2025. I think one of my favourite memories of the course so far has been the trip to Rhossili in Wales. Learning from lots of different speakers in stunning locations, spending time with friends, and then to top it off spotting the northern lights in a dark bay where the hostel was, made the trip!

What I’m enjoying most is the small lecture sizes, meaning you can form easier friendships and be more supported through work, as well as the mixing of different courses. This means you gain knowledge and experience from other branches of the subject you are studying.

What I gained from the RAU

In the future I would like to go further into the practice of sustainable farming and how it impacts other aspects of the environment, as well as the benefits for the food industry in the UK. I would like to also like to be part of a smallholding practising these techniques. The RAU has helped me with this by showing me soil sampling techniques and helping me build up my identification and survey skills, as well as taking me to a few different locations where farming has been practiced.

To any students looking to study at the RAU, I would say go for it! The RAU is a unique place full of people from different backgrounds but there will be a bunch that you fit in with. The course is really expanding my knowledge that I gathered on my previous BTEC and I’m enjoying it.
