University health centre

The health centre is available for medical advice, routine treatment or attention for illness or accident while you are at the University.

Location 

The health centre surgery is located in the corner of the Quad (opposite to the entrance of the Tithe Barn and to the right of the large wooden door leading to the main reception). 

Opening times

The campus surgery is only open during term time.

Medical registration 

The medical service at the University health centre is provided by the Phoenix Surgery in Chesterton Lane, Cirencester.

All students should register with the University health centre unless they are already registered with another local doctor. As students, you will be able to see your ‘home’ doctor as a ‘temporary resident’ during the holidays but should remain permanently registered with the University health centre during your time at RAU.

This is important because your record will then be available should you require medical attention. All overseas students are eligible for NHS treatment provided they are studying in the UK for six months or more. Following registration, you will receive a letter confirming that you are a patient at the Phoenix Surgery.

How do I make an appointment?

Once registered with the university health centre you will be able to access online booking for the RAU Clinic

All appointments are initially carried out by a triage nurse by telephone. A face-to-face appointment can then be organised if needed, but many things can be resolved over the phone. Please be prepared to discuss your concerns openly to facilitate this process. However, if you specifically wish to see the doctor, you will be able to make an appointment.

If you are unable to use the online booking system, please contact the main Phoenix Health Group surgery on: 01285 652056 where you will be able to book an appointment with the RAU Nurse that day. 

If the clinic has finished for the day and it is urgent, you will have the opportunity to speak to another clinician. Alternatively, you will be able to book an appointment for the next available clinic session. 

How do I get medical help when the health centre is not open?

You can do any of the following:

1. Contact the on-duty University first aider by contacting the Porter's Lodge (01285 652531 x2200). After 8:00pm (7:00pm at weekends) contact the university security staff directly on 07960 031821. This is available 24 hours/day
    
2. Telephone the Phoenix Surgery on 01285 652056. If necessary, you will be redirected to the surgery's out of hours service
    
3. Attend Cirencester Hospital which has a minor injuries service (not suitable for routine medical care) which is open from 8:00am - 8:00pm. The hospital is close to the RAU campus and signposted off the roundabout at the bottom of Tetbury Hill (see Google map)
    
4. Dial 111, for the NHS 111 service if:
    - you need medical help fast but it's not a 999 emergency
   - you think you need to go to A&E or need another NHS urgent care service
   - you don't know who to call or you don't have a GP to call
   - you need health information or reassurance about what to do next
    
5. In serious emergencies, dial 999 for the emergency ambulance service

If you need to call 999 for any reason, then you MUST immediately inform the Porter's Lodge (01285 652531 x2200) or after 8:00pm (7:00pm at weekends) the University security staff (07960 031821). This is to enable them to support you and undertake the necessary emergency plans.

First aid provision on campus

Please report to the Porter's Lodge (01285 652531 x2200) and they will contact the duty first aider.

In the event of a medical emergency in the evenings and weekends there will be a member of security staff available to offer support and advice. Tel no: 07960 031821 (after 8:00pm weekdays or 7:00pm at weekends).
