New Chief Instructor and Equine Facility Manager takes the reins at RAU equestrian facility

01 Dec 2020

The Royal Agricultural University (RAU) has appointed Jake Bromley-Fowles as Chief Instructor and Equine Facility Manager at Fossehill – the University’s equestrian enterprise.

Jake, who starts in the new post at the beginning of December, has extensive experience in equine competition, training and breeding programmes.

He said: “I am delighted to be starting my new post at Fossehill. The yard has so much potential and I am excited to embrace the challenges of this role.

“I believe that my career over the last fourteen years has put me in good stead to develop the unit whilst not losing sight of its core values and without compromise for the horses’ welfare. I sincerely look forward to meeting everyone and beginning this next chapter.”

Fossehill, which is within walking distance of the RAU’s campus in Cirencester, offers a range of livery packages for students and local horse owners, with facilities including stabling for 75 horses, a floodlit outdoor arena, an all-weather circular exercise track, a horse walker, excellent hacking and all-year-round turnout. Students on the RAU’s equine courses also benefit from the site for practical lectures and demonstrations.

Jake, a BHS accredited professional coach, will be available for training for livery clients and local horse owners as part of a new offering from Fossehill, as well as supporting student learning.

Having freelanced, groomed, ridden and taught he has enjoyed an extensive equestrian career thus far, including as stable jockey for Team GBR senior team and Olympic event rider Gemma Tattersall. With Gemma’s help, he developed his riding on her string of horses as well as on his own self-produced horse Zorro G.

In 2013 Jake started his own company, Wellow Equestrian Ltd, where he could deliver his vision to provide a quality training facility to build and strengthen the partnership between horse and rider.

“It has been a pleasure watching so many riders achieve this partnership”, said Jake who has gained his UK Coaching Certificate in Eventing (level 2), produced young horses, started a successful equine breeding programme, and competed up to Advanced level in Dressage and Eventing.

Since 2018, the equestrian expert has also worked as a Technician on the Equine Unit at Nottingham Trent University, with the experience strengthening his belief in the importance of combining equine education and science in order to maximise horse welfare.
