This practical, two-day course is designed specifically for farming and horticultural professionals who want to lead with greater confidence, improve team performance and strengthen their management skills. You will quickly develop your ability to balance operational performance with effective people management, gaining practical tools you can apply immediately in your day-to-day roles.

How to lead the farming or horticultural operation
On day one, you will cover:
- Session one: the modern manager
You will gain understanding of the changing role of the farm manager and team leaders within horticultural businesses, helping you balance operational delivery, people leadership and commercial pressures.
- Session two: planning and prioritisation
You will learn practical approaches to managing competing demands, including labour availability, production targets, weather challenges, quality standards and customer expectations.
- Session three: managing uncertainty and change
You will develop the confidence to build resilience and make effective decisions when faced with changing conditions, operational risks and unexpected challenges.
- Session four: operational leadership in practice
This facilitated, practical session enables you to apply your learning to realistic farming and horticultural scenarios, helping you develop solutions to operational challenges you may encounter in the workplace.
How to lead people in farming and horticultural businesses
On day two, you will cover:
- Session five: building high-performing teams
You will learn how to create engaged, motivated teams and foster a positive working culture that supports productivity and performance.
- Session six: communication across diverse workforces
You will develop practical communication skills to help you lead seasonal, multicultural and geographically dispersed teams more effectively.
- Session seven: coaching, performance management and developing future leaders
You will gain the skills to support team development, delegate effectively, provide constructive feedback and help develop future leaders within your business.
- Session eight: difficult conversations and personal leadership action planning
You will build confidence in handling challenging situations and leave with a personal leadership action plan to put your learning into practice.
A CPD Certificate of Completion
On completion, you will receive a CPD Certificate of Completion endorsed by the RAU.
How is the course delivered?
The course is delivered in person on our RAU Cirencester campus.
Learning face-to-face with experienced tutors and fellow professionals provides opportunities to share experiences, discuss common challenges and explore practical solutions relevant to farming and horticultural businesses.
Teaching time on Days 1 – 2 will take place between 9.00 am – 12.00 pm and 1.00 pm – 4.00 pm, with an hour for lunch.
