Paying your postgraduate tuition and accommodation fees

We understand that managing your finances can seem like a daunting and complicated process - but it need not be and you don't have to figure it out alone. The Student Fees team is here to help.

Ways to pay your tuition fees

The University does not automatically send out invoices to students for payment of tuition fees but they can be requested. The tuition fees and the balance outstanding due for payment are shown when you log on to your online self-registration on the Student Portal.

The Student Portal opens in the September before you start at the RAU (or January if you are starting in February) for self-registration. Further information about completing your online self-registration will be sent to you when the Student Portal opens. You should log on to the Student Portal using the Student ID that you received in your offer letter.

It is important that you make sure this is completed before you arrive at the RAU.

Determining your student status

On receipt of your application, the University will assess the level of fees that you'll be required to pay during your study. To enable the University to determine your classification status for fees purposes as either a UK, EU or International fee paying student we may ask you to provide the following information:

  • Your nationality
  • The nationality of both of your parents
  • Date of arrival in the UK (prior to the start of the course)
  • Your immigration status in the UK
  • The place and country where you have lived in the past three years
  • The place and country where your parents have lived in the past three years
  • In certain cases, when a fee status assessment cannot be completed on the information above, we may ask you to complete this full fee status questionnaire

Read our fee status questionnaire guidance for help with completing your fee status questionnaire.

Further information on fee status can be found on the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) website.

  • Remember, if someone other than you wishes to discuss your finances with the Student Fees department, you must email studentfees@rau.ac.uk in advance to give your authorisation

  • Please ensure that you have read and understood the terms and conditions for payment of fees policy and the refund policy. Plesae see Student Finance Policies

Ways to pay your accommodation fees

You need to apply for your University accommodation. The accommodation fees are shown on this page and depend on the type of room and whether you are paying for your food from The Restaurant (half board: bed and breakfast, or full board: breakfast, lunch and dinner).

Instructions on how to pay your University accommodation fees are below. The fees are the same for all students but how you pay them depends on whether you are classified as a UK, EU or International student.

If you are renting a property from a private landlord, then this does not apply to you. However, students are advised to speak to the University Student Lettings team for general advice about safe renting.

UK students

If you are taking out a student loan from Student Finance England / Scotland / Wales / Northern Ireland, then this [MB4] will be paid directly to you.

Your loan [MB5] will be paid into your bank account (the one you provided details for during your application) once you have fully registered on your course. As this payment doesn't usually happen on your first day at the RAU, we recommend that you make sure you've budgeted enough money for your first one or two weeks.

Your loan will be paid in three termly instalments (October, January and April).

Your University accommodation fees can be paid in two ways:

  • Termly in advance by recurring card payment (RCP) using a debit or credit card. Instalments are payable in September, January and April for October course starts (January, April and October for February start dates). Payments are made via the Accommodation Hub
  • Annually in advance by debit or credit card. Payable in September for October course starts (January for February start dates). Payments are made via the Accommodation Hub

You will need to log on to the Accommodation Hub and set up your payments. This should be completed at the same time as accepting your accommodation offer. Payments are scheduled and not taken immediately (unless you are late in setting up your payments). If you are in receipt of a loan, there will be the option to request that the dates are adjusted to coincide with the scheduled payments dates from your student loans company. You must make arrangements to pay for your accommodation before you arrive at the RAU. If you are having difficulties in making payment then please contact studentfees@rau.ac.uk.
